Beginner Hip Hop Class

There is no better way for me to start my journey than to dive headfirst into classes. We’re very lucky in Adelaide to be basically free of COVID-19, meaning we can engage in large group activities including dance classes. Every Thursday at 6pm, Edmund Chau (better known as Eddie), holds his beginner hip hop classes at Pure Funk Dance studio. I decided this would be my perfect introduction to immersing myself in the Adelaide community.
A beginner class is meant to be educational while fun, and that’s exactly what Eddie’s class was. We began with some warm-ups to avoid injury before Eddie announced he would be teaching his original choreography to the song Dynamite by BTS. The style was light-hearted and energetic and had me smiling during the entire 1 hour time block.
Eddie was super in depth and patient while going through each movement which really helped us nail the steps. Near the end of class, we all performed the choreography in small groups which was incredibly nerve wracking BUT everyone’s cheers really boosted my confidence and made me want to be a part of this community even more. We also had the opportunity to film ourselves in class, I’ve included the video above! I love how you can hear Eddie’s cheers throughout the entire recording. Did I do okay? Let me know in the comments!
I would highly recommend Pure Funk Dance Studio to anyone looking to have fun while learning hip hop technique! Even to those looking to build upon their current skills as they also offer a range of intermediate and advanced classes. Head to their Instagram (@purefunkdance) for their full timetable! I’m looking forward to trying their Wednesday night hip hop foundations class, and Friday night house class in the future.
