Original Choreography Tutorial
After immersing myself in the Adelaide hip hop community over the past few weeks, I decided to have a crack at creating some original choreography. I have quite a lot of experience choreographing styles such as contemporary and jazz but this is my first time stepping out of that box. Furthermore, as I am nowhere near a hip hop expert this piece of choreography is more or less just a series of foundations which I have learnt and connected together to create a short routine.
I chose the song Ballin Flossin by Chance the Rapper featuring Shawn Mendes because I was inspired by its heavy house beat. I could really play with the tempo of the song and make the movements dynamic. So far during my research, the styles of house and locking have resonated with me the most and so they became my muse for this piece of choreography.
A few attempts at freestyling helped me become familiar with the beat of the song and form some basic movements. While daunting at first once, I got into the flow of things I found myself really enjoying the ability to experiment with different steps.
Above is a short tutorial where I break down the choreography for you to learn at home! While fast, I would classify it beginner choreography so I would love for you to give it a try! Upload your own videos once you’ve learnt the dance and send them to me on twitter (@Caith0pe), I can’t wait to see your interpretations!
